It's the vacation of choice for millions. Sailing the seas in splendor. Sampling fascinating ports of call. Simply enjoying the escape into a world of service, sumptuous comforts and endless diversions. At a price virtually everyone can afford. CRUISING In the '9Os, a decade of dollar-stretching, there's no better way to spend your vacation budget than to take a cruise. It could be to the Bahamas, through the Alaskan waterways or round the world. And it could be on a floating palace, replete with diver sions, or simply on a small stylish ship akin to a yacht. Wherever you cruise, it's an eye-opener, an expenence that adds a memorable dimension to a vacation. Whether it's a family get-together or a singles getaway, the payoff is princely. You feel you've really taken a break amid the sights and sounds of faraway places. It's pure theater, scene after scene. And well it should be. After all, you're not stuck in one spot. You're on the move-at sea, with landfalls, from the ancient to the exotic, to punctuate your journey. Transiting the Panama Canal, for example, is a thrill as your ship sails from ocean to ocean and threas its way through the locks. "Anyone who can afford a vacation can take a cruise," says James G. Godsman, president of Cruise Lines Intemational Association (CLIA), the trade association for the cruise line industry. "In fact, you can actually save money that way-most comparable vacations on land cost more on a per-day basis. In absolute dollars, you know what you'll be spendling." Value is what your money's worth, and on a cruise your dollar goes further. In a recent CLIA survey, two-thirds of passengers thought a cruise turned out to be a better vacation than all other types of travel. Why? There are a dozen answers, from "you relax and get away from it all" to "it's a way to meet interesting people." Along with comfortable cabins and a wide choice of activities, you get out standing entertainment&endash;and state-of-the-art pampering. There's nothing like a cruise anywhere else in today's great travel bazaar. While you soak up the shipboard activities, you see the world. Your ship glides through the jewels of Greek and Turkish islands, past the promontories and isles of the Baltic, n and out of fjords along Norway's zigzag coastline, among the tropical stepping stones of Hawaii and the Caribbean, up and down the waters of the Pacific Rim - with itineraries that include Bangkok, Borneo and Bora Bora. ![]() [Next] 1 of 6
